VOIP: Promising, Not Perfect
Friday, January 12, 2007 15:06I enjoy new technology. I guess I am also somewhat of a gadget freak and an early adopter. Anyway, I find emerging technology fascinating and want to experience it whenever possible.
I am also a big fan of VOIP. It has definitely gone mainstream and presents a challenge to conventional forms of land telephony, as offered by the telcos.
Anyone following the commercials for Vonage and seeing the product offerings and displays for major VOIP services at large electronic retailers like Circuit City and Best Buy can quickly realize how important VOIP has become. In fact, most of us have communicated frequently with individuals and businesses on VOIP systems and didn’t even realize it.
Also, the large cable companies are offering their telephone services via VOIP for the most part.
But, here is the rub: my personal experience with VOIP has been mixed.
I became fascinated with Skype a few months ago. Like other forms of VOIP, when it’s good, it’s very good. But not consistently.
I even bought a Linksys Skype telephone. It worked well.
With all of this personal excitement about the technology, and the ability to make long distance calls on my cell phone, I canceled my land line. Well, that was a mistake.
I am an experienced Internet Marketing professional and consultant who recently left a full-time position at a major Florida health insurance company (HMO). As a result, I am always trying to connect with potential employers. (Shameless plug: my online resume is here). I found that at times during important long distance calls, the cell would drop the call. Then, I would go to the Skype phone. At times, it was great. Then, on some calls, it was difficult to understand the other caller due to “burps” and “glitches” during the call.
I still like Skype. But I can’t depend on it for mainstream telephony. As a result of these inconsistencies, including cell phone call drops, I reordered a conventional land line.
I fully understand that VOIP adoption is mainstream now and growing. Some technology marketing experts predict that this will be the dominant form of voice communication.
But it still has a ways to go.
