Plastic Cards and Embedded Technology: A Learning Experience

Friday, May 4, 2007 16:24

A couple of months ago, I accepted a full-time position as Marketing Director for a plastic card manufacturing company. It’s an interesting job. I actually enjoy this more than working strictly in the “tech” sector. I have a chance to learn more about “nuts and bolts” manufacturing. What is especially interesting is the education I am receiving about plastic cards and its relationship to technology. Of course, basic business cards are taken for granted. But, when you add plastic to the equation, it brings an entirely new dimension to what has always been considered a basic tool of business.

Just consider for a moment how plastic cards utilize technology. With bar coding, magnetic stripes and the utilization of special offers embedded into plastic cards, it starts to become obvious how powerful a business and marketing tool a plastic card can actually become.

My employer, Visual Products Inc., is a custom shop that manufactures plastic business cards, gift cards, hotel key cards, loyalty cards and almost anything you can think of utilizing a plastic card concept.
