The number is expected to break a format record.

Warner Bros. is expected to ship a record one million Blu-ray copies of The Dark Knight to retail stores for its release on December 9.

That’s according to an article by Video Business.

Paramount Studios reported in October that Iron Man, the Robert Downey action hit, sold 500,000 Blu-ray discs in the first week. But the studio did not reveal how many discs were actually shipped.

Batman will look good in Blu.

If the Video Business report is correct, however, The Dark Knight will likely set a record for the most Blu-ray units shipped in the first week. (Warner declined to comment for the article.)

The number of units shipped reflects both Warner’s commitment to Blu-ray and the belief that the Blu-ray version of The Dark Knight will be a huge seller this holiday season. The Batman film was a summer blockbuster. Additionally, Blu-ray company officials have noted recently that Blu-ray disc sales are rising thanks to increasing sales of Blu-ray players, which have fallen in price under $200.

To illustrate the dramatic growth in Blu-ray over the last year, Video Business notes that Sony set a record in March 2007 when it became the first studio to shop 100,000 Blu-ray copies of a movie (Casino Royale.)

“Given (The Dark Knight’s) release date timing and our research, this indicates that a lot of customers are waiting to purchase this title,” a Warner official told Video Business. “If a household is on the fence about making a Blu-ray player or PS3 purchase, this title can be influential in making that happen.”
