What’s Causing The Apple iPad 3G Shortage
Sunday, May 16, 2010 16:46If you are planning on going for a long ride with your kid and wife, midst the craze of capturing the hands-on video of your soon-to-be iPad 3G — then don’t bother. Just don’t bother going out of the house and driving all the way to the Apple store because all 3G models of the iPad have been sold out.
Yep, and don’t be alarmed because this just happened in the last week, while you were waiting for the crowd to simmer away. Apple Insider reported the shortage of the iPads on Thursday, and later on, the situation got more serious.
Areas like, Boston, Chicago, Denver, New York, Miami and San Francisco followed the “sold out” streak and now Apple has decided to let customers put their names on a waiting list. But don’t keep your hopes too high, as I believe this waiting list is going to make you wait for a Loooong time.
Why the Shortage?
So why do you think, there is a shortage? Well, there are two theories here –
* Theory A
o Apple underestimated the sales of the iPad before its release and thought that, maybe like the iPhone, it is going to take 70 to 80 days for the iPad to settle its roots down in the market.
* Theory B
o Apple already announced the sales of the iPad in the international market. They are going to open up on May 28, so maybe that’s one reason for Apple to hold back on the sales inside U.S. This way, they can just save a huge number of this product for a bigger market, in hopes of gaining extra profits.
